Research & Graduate Studies
The Associate Academic Vice President over Research & Graduate Studies has responsibility for facilitating research on campus including sponsored research programs, research regulatory compliance, research development, facilitating positive research impact beyond the university, and the allocation of funds that support the general research effort at BYU. Graduate Studies works with Dr. Howell on issues related to vision, strategy, and funding of graduate programs and the graduate student experience. Dr. Howell has oversight of the Research Administration Office, Research Development, Technology Transfer Office, Creative Works Office, Copyright Licensing Office, the BYU Microscopy facility, is the Responsible Official for research regulatory compliance (including IRB, IACUC, IBC, and others), and provides administrative support for the MRI Research Facility. Dr. Howell interfaces with Risk Management to ensure safety in both teaching and research endeavors and is a member of the BYU Incident Management Team. Resource allocations for capital equipment, academic space, capital improvement projects (CNA) and academic technology systems (ITI, ITS, and ITD) are coordinated by Dr. Howell.
