Re: Alcuin / Maeser

Eligibility:   Full-time faculty, professional or professorial, of Brigham Young University for at least five years prior to the nomination.  All awards are presented to those individuals who have exhibited devotion to the teaching of general education courses.  The criteria for selection will include length and breadth of service to the GE program, curriculum development of both new and existing courses, student evaluations, and superb teaching.

Who may nominate:  Anyone may nominate a candidate for these awards, but all nominations are to be submitted through the nominee's Department Chair.  The Undergraduate Education Dean's office and the Faculty General Education Council may make an independent nomination for either award.

General Information: The Alcuin Fellowship is named after the 8th-century scholar Alcuin of York, master of all the liberal arts, who headed the Palace School of Charlemagne and brought about major education reform throughout the Frankish kingdom. The fellowship recognizes outstanding service to the teaching of GE courses over shorter periods of time. The Alcuin Fellowship appointments are also for three years and carry with them a transfer of funds into an unrestricted account for the awardee to use for curriculum development, other teaching needs, or support of research. A transfer of $4,000 takes place at the beginning of each calendar year of the award. Monies received can be carried forward one year.
